The first solo exhibition of the German artist Barbara Muhr is on display at the Municipal Gallery in Pilsen. The collection of large-scale paintings entitled Forbidden Fruit reflects the immemorial conflict between temptation and morality. The artist brings the mythological topic of the forbidden fruit into the contemporary world, by which she depicts not only its original form, but also temptations in everyday life. Some of the portrayed faces are based on author’s acquaintances and friends. Her figural paintings combine a realistic approach and abstraction. Often, two motifs appear in them – the motif of fruit that moderates the explicitness of expression, and also the motif of animals that refers to animal instincts.
The exhibition is not only a generational statement, but also it raises a question about moral rules that we follow. The boundaries between what one is allowed or not allowed to do, or what is good and what is no longer, are blurred in Muhr’s paintings.
Some of the paintings were created exclusively for this exhibition. Visitors may also know her work from the Pilsen event, Barva na ulici (Colour in the Street).
The entrance is free every first Sunday of a month.
