The painter Jakub Tomáš, one of the most distinctive representatives of contemporary painting, presents his first solo exhibition in Pilsen at the Pilsen Municipal Gallery.
The West Point project series focuses on the artists which have been formed by the context of Pilsen and the southwestern borderlands. Now, it introduces visitors to canvases of this painter whose exhibitions could be seen for example in New York, Los Angeles and London.
The author’s work concentrates primarily on figures. Often, it stems from the realistic sources, however, the result tends rather towards a schematic depiction in which all models blend into each other, giving birth to a brand-new form of reality.
The uniting element of this exhibition, which follows the series of portraits created in Los Angeles, is a motif of a face. The paintings show us faces of people that the author knows, but also the anonymous ones which are inspired by his own photographs and magazines. The painter redesigns, transforms and rearranges these faces in his work, sometimes into the identities that have never existed before. The observer can read in their features – not only the painter’s personal experience, accompanied by the numerous culture allusions, but also everyday situations from their daily life.
The entrance is free every first Sunday of a month.
