Historical Underground

Beneath Pilsen’s historic city centre stretch nearly 20 km of passageways, cellars and water wells. Together they make up Pilsen’s Historical Underground. This underground labyrinth ranks among the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic. Construction began at the end of the 13th century, reaching as many as three floors deep in some areas. Visitors of the Historical Underground get to walk through an almost 800-metre long section. The entrance is located in the same brewing home which houses the Brewery Museum. Embarking on a tour here is always a great choice – not only on days when you’re trying to escape the heat.

Underneath a medieval city

Pilsen Historical Underground served a number of purposes. It was used to store food and ice and, of course, to make beer. The beer fermented and matured in the cellars, where it was then stored. The most important function of these underground areas was however assuring access to water. Originally, as many as 360 wells could be found under Pilsen’s historic city centre. We also can’t leave out the areas which served as safe havens. The local inhabitants could hide here in times of war or siege as a way to seek refuge. Today you will find pleasant restaurants, wine bars and private cellars located on the first floor of the  underground.

Tour of the Pilsen Historic Underground

A large array of items were discovered in the water wells, thanks to which visitors can better understand what it was like to live in a city from the Middle Ages. A section of the tour is dedicated to the historic waterworks system, which dates back to the first half of the 16th century. Additionally, at the end of the tour, visitors aged 18 or older will receive a voucher for a free beer which can be redeemed at a number of the Brewery restaurants.

For safety reasons, all visitors are required to wear a helmet over the course of the entire tour. Also, keep in mind that temperatures in the Historic Underground tend to hang around 12°C (54°F), which is why we recommend wearing warm clothing.
