The neo-Renaissance building that houses the Great Theatre and its elegant interior can be found on the outer edge of Pilsen’s historic city centre. Just travel to Smetanovy sady, and the theatre is located near the Great Synagogue. Similar to the modern New Theatre, the four-ensemble J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen belongs to the forefront of the Czech theatre scene.

History of the theatre
The once German Theatre in Pilsen was completed in the 1860s. Pilsen locals were forced to wait until 1902 before a permanent theatre featuring Czech-language plays was made. It was at that time that a neo-Renaissance structure with Art-Nouveau elements was finished according to the design of Antonín Balšánek. The opera Libuše was the first-ever performance held in this theatre. The Nepomuk painter, Augustin Němejc, is responsible for the stage curtain.
Repertoire
The Great Theatre is one of three home stages within the J. K. Tyl Theatre. When compared to the New Theatre, here you will most likely enjoy a more traditional production, however, exceptions have been made. Tickets for individual shows and season tickets may be purchased online or at the ticket office at Smetanovy sady 16.
